MSA+D is a Tofino-based architectural practice focused on projects on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. We draw from the belief that exceptional design means that projects blend seamlessly with their surroundings and contribute positively to the people and communities they serve.

We understand the profound connection between human well-being and interaction with the natural environment. Recognizing that nature plays a vital role in wellness, we design buildings that work in relationship with the natural world. Reflections, shadows, quality of light, sounds, color, patterns, and even more abstract concepts like mystery, can impact both our physical and mental states. Our goal is to craft spaces that not only evoke feelings of tranquility, connection to the earth, and relaxation but also contribute to an overall sense of improved well-being.

On the West coast, it is crucial for buildings to have a sturdy roof to shield against heavy rainfall and, on rare occasions, intense snowfall. We also acknowledge that buildings need to 'breathe' so we aim to implement cross-ventilation, a passive ventilation technique, that typically results in the highest level of occupant comfort and allows for easy balancing of indoor air temperature. While our buildings should allow for proper airflow, we also prioritize airtight construction and continuous insulation since we understand that as a society, we need to reduce our global impact and overall reliance on mechanical systems.

We take a forward-thinking approach to architecture, considering the entire life cycle of a building. Imagine constructing a home today that could be cherished and used by your grandchildren in the years to come. Alternatively, envision breathing new life into an existing building, giving it a second chance to be a vital part of our communities. We take great satisfaction in collaborating with clients who prioritize the global impact of their projects and recognize the necessity of this mindset for the future. Our goal is to utilize resources responsibly, so we specify wood and other renewable materials wherever possible, and prefer products that have a neutral impact on indoor air quality and can be sourced locally.
